My 2nd week on the green island!

This week has been a little bit less exciting than the last one just because most of the things I did were not new for me anymore. The kids have started school again which means that I have a lot of freetime during the week. It also means that I have to pick them up every day at 2:30 pm which gives me some routine during the day.

On Wednesday I arranged a meeting with Nadine, an au pair from Germany, who is also living in Skerries. Lindsey came as well and we went to Nealons, a small pub in Skerries. It was nice but unfortunately they did not sell any hot chocolate :(

Nadine and I met again on Friday morning to take a walk with the little girl that Nadine is taking care of. We went to the playground and the weather was really nice. Because of the wonderful weather Caroline and I decided to take the kids out for a walk and some ball games at the beach later in the afternoon. We had a lot of fun. On Firday evening John and Caroline went out for dinner and I babysat. Megan had a dance class and Cian played some soccer while waiting. I was already really looking forward to Saturday because there was a big au pair meeting in Dublin planned for the afternoon.

On Saturday Marion, Nadine, Lindsey and I met at the train station to go into Dublin. We met Carina, who lives in Balbriggan, close to Skerries, on the train and had a nice afternoon in Dublin. The weather turned out to be great eventhough the forecasts said it would rain. At 3pm we went to St. Stephen's Green where lots and lots of other au pairs were already waiting. It must have been about 50 au pairs alltogether. We went into the park where we sat down and started talking to eachother. While some au pairs sat too far away to talk to I started talking to Taru, an au pair from Finland. She is really nice and Lindsey and I invited her to come along in the evening. We also met Meghan from Canada and Teresa from Germany who decided to meet up with us in the evening as well. In the evening we met the three girls in the Temple Bar district and our evening out started in Fitzsimons, before we went to the Hard Rock Cafe and then back to Fitzsimons. It was lots of fun and I really liked that all of the pubs and bars had really good live music. Lindsey and I decided not to take the last train at 11:20pm but to take the next night bus at 2am. Finally we took the last night bus at 4 back to Skerries. It was a long night but it was a great day and we had lots of fun.
On Sunday Taru, Nadine and I met in Malahide to take a tour of the Malahide Castle. It is a beautiful castle and it is definitely worth visiting but the three of us did not like the audio tour they give you. It seems so commercialized and not personal. They could have done better. But other than that the castle was really nice and we had a nice and culture-filled day! :)

Time flies by in Ireland

Alright, I finally have some time to concentrate on writing a post into my English blog. I have written into my German blog everyday so that my family back in Germany knows what I am up to and I am sorry that I did not have a chance to catch up with you guys earlier. I will not be able to write two blogs everyday so I decided to write my English blog once a week. You will most likely hear from me every Sunday or Monday so that you know what I have been up to the past week. I can already tell you now that my first week in Ireland flew by and that it has been pretty exciting already.

Sunday, August 28th, was my departure day in Germany and so it was also my first day in Ireland. My farewell party was on August 27th and since some of my guest stayed pretty late I only got a few hours of sleep. Nontheless, I was up at 6am getting ready for the flight into my next adventure: Ireland. Since Moni and Annie came to my farewell party my sister and I took them to the airport with us and I did not have to say goodbye to them until then. At the airport I met 3 other au pairs, Sina, Anna and Philine. All of them would be in my flight and Sina would even be sitting next to me. It was nice to have somebody to talk to eventhough we didn't know eachother before. After our arrival in Dublin we got our luggage and were greeted by our hostfamilies. I did not see mine until Megan was standing right next to me and I almost bumped into her. They all gave me a big hug and I feeled really welcomed. Caroline drove us back to Skerries and after a short tour through town we drove to the house and had lunch. Cian gave me a houstour and showed me my room. After exploring the house we all took a walk through Skerries which was beautiful. I was so glad I had my camera with me to take some photos of my first impressions of Skerries. After dinner I fell right into my bed because I was so tired.

Since the kids were still off school for the first few days I was in Ireland, Caroline, Cian, Megan and I went into Dublin on Monday. Caroline wanted to show me some of the main places to go to and she also wanted to make sure that I understood how the train system works in Ireland. It was really nice of her and I got to see a little bit of Dublin already. We arrived at the Pearse Street Station and made our way up to Grafton Street where Caroline took me to the Dublin Tourist Office to get some maps and information. We then walked into Graften Street were we parted. While Caroline and Cian went to St. Stephen's Green to go to the playground, Megan and I did some shopping in Grafton Street. It was really nice to go through the shops with Megan and to get to know her a little bit better that way. After we came back from Dublin, I arranged a meeting with Lindsey, an American au pair in Skerries. We went to the Chipper together and had a nice evening. It was the first of a few meetings that past week.

On Tuesday I was alone with the kids for the first time. Caroline had to go into Dublin and so the kids and I had the morning to get to know eachother more. After the kids got up and had dinner we played outside for a long time (they like to play ballgames) and later went inside to continue with some boardgames. Caroline was back at home for a late lunch. Nothring really spectacular happend the rest of the day. I played with the kids and did some cleaning up and decorating of my room.

Because it was the kids' last day of their summer break Caroline wanted to spend the day with the kids on Wednesday. I was off the whole day and arranged a meeting with Marion, a French au pair in Skerries. We met up for lunch, which we had at Olive, a cute little cafe with great paninis. We then took a little walk through Skerries, which I continued after dropping Marion off at her house. I invited her to go out with Lindsey, Annekathrin, a German au pair in Julianstown, about 20 minutes from Skerries, and me and she said she would think about it.  Since I took a really long walk through Skerries I did not come back home until probably 4 or 5 pm. I then found out that there is another au pair, Simone from Austria, in Rush, about 10 kms south of Skerries, who was interested in coming to Skerries tonight as well. Just before 8 when we wanted to meet, Marion sent me a message that she was coming too. The five of us went to the Blue Bar, which is a nice restaurant and bar. It was a nice evening and I am really happy that I have met some other au pairs living close by already.

Thursday was Cian and Megan's first day of school. I did not have to drop them off at school in the morning, since Caroline and John did that. I went into downtown Skerries in the morning to look into the swift stores that Lindsey has been telling me about. I was looking for a bigger purse but couldn't really find one that I really liked. At 12 I went to the school to pick up the kids with Caroline. They only had a half day because it was their first day back. I made them some lunch and helped Caroline to put up some laundry on the line outside. Caroline and the kids went to visit Caroline's parents in the afternoon so I was off and took another walk along Skerries beaches. I just can't get enough of that sea and I am so happy that I have now discovered that I can see a small bit of the sea even from my bedroom window :) After Caroline and the kids came back I played with them while Caroline was making dinner and when we went to her dance class. John came home from work at about 7 and then went out for a run. When he came back I went to meet Lindsey. We originally wanted to get some icecream at Skerries' famos icefood place "Storm in a teacup" but unfortunately when we arrived at 9pm the sign said that they had closed at 8pm already. Instead we went to the supermarket where I bought a little snack and where I also finally found nail polish remover :)

When I went to school with Caroline on Friday morning to drop the kids off I realized once again how different the Irish school system and organization is from the German. While most kids in German walk alone to and from school here in Ireland all kids are droped off in the classroom and picked up at the school gates. The older the kids get the more responsibilities they have themselves. Megan for example is brought to the school door while Cian is brought to his classroom. In the morning the school is full with pupils, parents, younger siblings and teachers. It is just crazy. It was important that I come with Caroline so that she could introduce me to Cian's class teacher. He has to know my face so that he lets Cian go with me when he brings him out to the school gate. It is just so different. What is really cute though is the school uniform. Cian and Megan's school has a really nice one. The colors are dark and light blue which go really good togehter. Their uniform is much nicer than those of the other schools in town. John and Caroline were invited to a wedding that day so I was alone with the kids when they came home from school. They did not have homework yet, so we did play some ball and board games and had pizza as dinner. At some point Cian said "This is the best day ever - especially with you!" - which of course was a small exaggeration but it was so cute! We started watching a movie (Ratatouille) before the kids had to go to bed.

My first weekend in Ireland was pretty exciting already eventhough it was my first. Lindsey had planned to make a weekend trip to the westcoast of Ireland to Galway and asked me if I wanted to come along. After talking to my hostfamily I decided to come and did not regret my decision at all. Lindesy and I met up at the trainstation at about half seven on Saturday morning. It was really early and once we were in Dublin we only wanted to get something to eat for breakfast. It took us a long time until we finally found a supermarket where we could buy something to eat. It took us such a long time because Dublin was empty that early on a Saturday morning. Nobody was out and all of the shops and restaurants were still closed. Once we had our breakfast Lindsey and I got in line for the bus hoping that we would still get a seat in the bus. There were many people waiting but as we found out soon after most of these did not have a ticket yet, just like Lindsey and me. The bus was pretty full but there was enough space for Lindsey and me to have an extra seat so that we could put our backpacks on there and have some more space. It was great and I was actually able to sleep a bit on the bus. We arrived in Galway a little before noon and our tour to the Cliffs of Moher wasn't supposed to leave until 1pm. We had enough time to go to the hostel, check in and leave our bags there before we went back to the bus station were we had to wait until at least 1:20pm for our bus driver to pick us up. Not only was he late, he was also not very talkative. He did not tell us his name, nor did he tell us anything about possible sights and points of interests we passed. We did stop for a quick photo stop to take photos of the Galway Bay. At the next stop we were mixed together with another earlier group so that we also got a new tourguide and a better bus. The new tourguide, Paul, was much more talkative and he told us a lot of things about Ireland and the region. Before arriving at the Cliffs of Moher we had another photo stop on top of Corkscrew Hill. I now know where that name comes from because the streets up there are just crazy. I haven't seen that many steep bends since I have been back from Long Valley. Once we were at the Cliffs we had about 1 1/2 hours to explore everything and take photos. I could have used more because I could have watched the beauty of the Cliffs the whole day but we did only book a half day tour so it was enough time to get a good view. Luckily it was not too crowded so that we could get good views from everywhere. When I first saw the Cliffs of Moher I had the same feeling that I have when I first saw the Grand Canyon or the Niagara Falls - WOW! It is indescribeable and even photos cannot capture the beauty of that magical place. Luckily the weather turned really nice just before we arrived at the Cliffs so that we could see the sund reflecting in the water and there were more and more sections of blue sky looking through the white clouds. It was amazing! If you ever get a chacne to visit Ireland you should definitely go to the Cliffs of Moher as well! From all the things I want to do here in Ireland the Cliffs were in my top 3 and I am so thankful that I got to see them on such a lovely day. Back in the bus we had a few more photo stops at the Black Head Lighthouse and a castle before we went back to Galway. After moving into our room at the hostel, which was very big, nice and clean, Lindsey and I went out on the search for dinner. We did eventually find a place with a waitress nice enough to serve us and we both had Pizza Magherita. After dinner we met up with a group of Galway au pairs. It was a fun night but since Lindsey and I had been up for such a long time we only stayed a few hours before falling into our beds in the hostelroom.

On Sunday, Lindsey and I went into town to get a better picture of Galway. An Ironman competition was going on the in harbor part of the city and Lindsey and I decided to watch it for a little while. It was starting to rain harder though and our umbrellas could not stand the wind which is why we decided to go into a bar. We had a really good Marshmallow Hot Chocolate there and waited until the rain cleared away. With bright sky and sun we now went down the road to the Galway bay where we sat down on some rocks. While Lindsey did some rock hopping I enjoyed the sun, which was good because the rest of the day it disappeared behind clouds. After the Bay Lindsey and I went to the Claddagh Ring Museum. The Claddagh Ring is a traditional ring in the Galway area. It consists of three parts, hands (for friendship), holding a heart (for love) that is topped by a crown (for loyality). I got a Claddagh Ring in the shop the museum belonged to - the only remaining original maker of the Claddagh Ring. For the rest of the day it was really hard to judge what to do. You could never really tell if it had stopped raining or now, which is why the rest of the day was a mixture  between shopping and sightseeing. at 6:45 pm our bus to Dubln was supposed to depart. Because it left 10 minutes early Lindsey and I were still able to get the 9:22 pm train back to Skerries. An exciting and definitely amazing weekend ended

All in all, my first week in Ireland flew by and I feel like I have been here longer already. I am happy to see what the next weeks bring for me!

Ireland it is!!!!

It seems like everything is falling into place.
After talking to lots and lots of different families and after being "rejected" by many families because I was not availbale for a longer period it came down to decision between two families. One family in the UK that I have been talking about before and another family from an Irish seaside town north of Dublin with two children ( ♀ 11 & ♂ 7).
I talked to both of the families this week and I made a decision: I will be staying with the family in Ireland from late August until the end of January.
I cannot really say why I decided to stay with them but I think that the feeling I have with them is better than the feeling I have with the family from England. Anyway. I can't wait now that everything is set. The good thing is that I have enough time to concentrate on my Master's thesis now that I don't have anything else to care and worry about. It will all work out well! :D
That might have been my last post for a couple of weeks/months. I will definitely come back to you as soon as my preparations start though.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Daniela

Decision time...

Hello,

after some time here is another blog post from me and this one has a reason. I am currently talking to two great host families and I have to decide soon which one I want to stay with. I have talked to a lot of families and many of them wanted me to stay longer than I could or wanted me to come earlier than I could. One family from Cork, Ireland was really interested but since the dad got a job abroad they will be all moving abroad. Another family from Ireland needs an au pair sooner than they thought because their current au pair needs to go home and a family from Brighton that I really liked has problems with their au pair that just arrived and does not want to think about their next au pair yet...as you can see there are a lot of things that came in my way when I was trying to find the right host family but now I have two families that I really like so far and that totally meet my expectations that I had in my time abroad. The good thing is that they seem to be really interested in me and that they both want me to be their au pair at this point. So it is my time to decide which family I want to stay with. I will give you some information about the families, maybe you can help me with my decision:

  • a single mom from Dublin, Ireland, 2 kids ♂ 12 years and ♀ 9 years. The kids would be in school until 2:30pm and I would have to help in the morning and in the afternoon until the mom comes home, around 5:30pm. She works for Converse ;) I would have to cook dinner for the kids, keep the house tidy and prepare the kids' school uniforms. The family lives in a nice and quite suburb of Dublin only 8 kms from the city centre and 5 kms from the closest beach! I would have to help the kids with their homework and the girl is sometimes challenged with her homework. I would not have a problem helping her though. I would have to babysit one or two nights a week. The kids are with their dad one night a week though. She would pay me 100 € per week. The mom will call me tomorrow night and I am really looking forward to speaking to her. She sounds really nice through the emails she writes.

  • a family from Mortimer, England, 2 kids ♀ 8 years and ♂ 5 years. The kids both go to school and I would need to help in the mornings, drop off the kids at school and pick them up again between 3 and 4pm. In the afternoon I would have to prepare a snack fro the kids, help them with their homework, play with them...well whatever you do with kids. I would also have to keep the house clean, iron and prepare dinner. Both parents work as doctors. The dad is from Germany and mom is from the Caribbean. I would have to speak German with the kids because they are raised bilingual. I should also read and write German with the girl. I would have to babysit one night per week. They live in a village about 10 minutes by train from Reading and about 1 hour to London. I spoke to the mom on Monday evening and she sounds really nice. She would be happy to help me find a school where I could help out while I am there which would be great because I really do not want to do any language classes.

As you can see: two great families and it is a really hard decision for me. Maybe it will be easier after talking to the mom from Dublin on the phone. Anyway, if you have any idea how you could help me with my decision let me know!

I will come back to you with the decision!

Until then,
Daniela

Update....

I know it has been quite a while but I had my head full with studying for my History and my German exams on Monday and today. It was insane: two 4-hour exams in one week and I survived! It feels SO GOOD! :)You might understand that I did not really have the time for writing blog entries during all of my studies. I did have au pair-related converstations in the last weeks though and I want to give you an update on that.

The problem that appeared to me is that I only want to go abroad until December or January. Most host families look for au pairs that can stay at least 6 months, preferably even longer. I do understand that but it is of course something that works against me. Nevertheless, I have talked to a lot of families via email. They seem to like my profile and some of them seemed really nice as well. There were three families from Australia who wrote me as well and they were all lovely! I decided that I will not go to Australia though because of the expensive flight and the visa I would need. Going to the UK or Ireland seems a lot easier. Now, I might still be able to travel to the States before or after my au pair job. Anyway, right now I have some host families that I write emails with and they seem to be very nice. Let me give you a short overview:

  • a family from Iver, UK, 4 kids (3 ♀, 6 ♂, 7 ♀, 11 ♂) - mom works shifts as a midwife and dad works abroad. I would probably have a lot of work but the mom is really nice and the kids are cute!
  • a family from Reading, UK, 2 kids (5 ♂, 8 ♀) - I have only exchanged some emails with them. They want to talk to me on the phone some time next week. The problem is that they would want me to come from August until February but they said that we could talk about that. They would want me to speak German to the kids (they are partly German)
  • a family from Cork, Ireland, 2 kids (6 ♀, 11 ♀) - a single mom. We want to skype next week.
  • a family from Newbridge, Ireland, 2 kids (11 ♂, 13 ♀) - they might need an au pair to start in October, which would not be the time I want to start but they are not 100% sure yet
  • a family from Waterford, Ireland, 2 kids (4 ♂, 6 ♂) - they just wrote me an email which I still have to answer but they sound like a nice family
  • a family from Egham, UK, 2 kids (11 ♂, 13 ♀) - they want somebody for 6 months as well but it seems like they like my profile so let's see how it goes
  • a family from Cork, Ireland, 2 kids (8 months ♀, 3 ♂) - I would mainly be responsible for the 3-year-old boy, the mom works part-time and the dad works abroad, the grandma helps out with the girl. They sound really nice and we are going to skype! :)

As you can see there are a lot of families and I feel like I get emails from new families almost every day. I do of course have my preferences right now but I do not want to make any decision before talking to some of the families on the phone. Before I got into looking for host families the UK was my number one choice, but after being in touch with a lot of Irish families I feel like Ireland would be a great place to go to as well. Right now I would only decide because of the family, not because of the location.

Most au pairs who go to the UK or Ireland take English classes during their stay but honestly I would not want to do that. I have had English classes of all kinds in university for the last 4 years. Also I think that they might not be challening enough for me. I though about helping out at a school but I would have to see if that would work out. Other than that I found these TEFL classes that they offer almost everywhere in England and Ireland and where I would get a certificate as a "Teacher of English as a Foreign Language". Eventhough I theoretically already am an English teacher I think that certificate could be something useful for me!

Anything else you need to know....I can't think of anything! I hope you enjoyed reading this post! I am looking forward to any comments! :D

Talk to you soon,
Daniela

Host families...

I created my profile on aupair-world.net on Thursday and I am already talking to some host families in England, Ireland and Australia! It is so exciting and it brings back the memories of the exciting time when I was in the matching process with Cultural Care for my aupair year in the US.
One of my problems is that I don't really know what I want. It would be amazing to go to Australia for up to 6 months but the flight is so extremely expensive. The cheapest one I found was 1.250 €...but will I ever get such an opportunity again?!?! Also, I think now that I have the opportunity I should probably go to England to get to know the culture a little better. Because all you talk about in English classes at school in the first 2 or 3 years is England and as an English teacher it would be great to know more about the culture than only London as a tourist and everything I know from books...plus the flight would be a lot cheaper. Ireland is just a great country. I think it would be great to live there with the beautiful countryside and all.
I guess I will see which families are out there and will just go with the old saying: I will go with the family that I like best! :)

That's it!

Hello my lovely followers :)

I finally have a reason again to start a blog since I am planning to go abroad for up to 5 months in September 2011.
I will be graduating from uni in the summer and my teaching program won't start until early/mid 2012, which is why I have plenty of time to gain some great experiences in an English-speaking country. I have published my profile on an aupair homepage (www.aupair-world.net) yesterday where I am looking for host families from the UK, Ireland or Australia. I am also still looking for ways to go to the US for only a few months.

I will inform you when I have news...:)

Talk to you soon, Daniela
